There is this popular question going viral on social media such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, where alot of people are using the question abi? We are wondering what it really means. So in this post, we're going to take a look at it meaning very shortly.
Abi? And it meaning in English
Abi? – a question meaning Isn’t it? / Right? This word is used as confirmation to what someone has said or did. Abi often comes with question mark (?) Asking someone in order to attest if he/she/they agree with what you are doing or about to do. It is also a way of affirming to ensure that you're acting according to the person's request.
Example 1: You will be coming with us to the bank, abi? (Formal British + piggin)
Example 2: The movie sweet you, abi?
Example 3: Make I put am here abi?

Now that we know the meaning of the population slang question, we have to be using it to create fun while chatting with friends.
Conclusion
In a friendly or informal conversation, you can use Nigerian piggin or slangs with formal English to culturally express yourself or make an appeal. This is called code mixing or code switching (such is a style of language often used to create emphasis in spoken English)
Some slangs can blend into formal English expression naturally. This is what I called 'Assim collo' or assim collos, that is, assimilable colloquial.
Irrespective of how these words (assim collos) match or blend into formal spoken English, it not advisable to use them in writing of any kind.
Spoken English is considered 'informal' in nature while writing is considered 'formal' irrespective of format.
